K9 Handlers with Chase

Senior Officer Gary Herbst has been employed with the Helena Police Department since March 2001. He 16 years experience in law enforcement and has 15 years of experience as a K-9 handler. He has been employed with the Helena Police Department for three years.

Chase is a three-year-old German Shepherd who is trained in patrol work and narcotic detection.

Chase was trained through Midwest Canine Alternatives in Long Prairie MN. Chase is trained in locating illegal narcotics.  He is trained in all areas of patrol work, which includes tracking, building searches, article and evidence searches, criminal apprehension, and handler protection.

Officer Danny David has been employed with the Helena Police Department since August 2004.  In April 2007 he became a K9 officer. Officer David and his new partner, Roy, flew to Spring Hope, North Carolina for 6 weeks of training.

Roy is a four and a half Belgian Malinois who is trained in patrol work and explosive detection.

Roy is trained in locating explosives.  He is trained in all areas of patrol work, which includes tracking, building searches, article and evidence searches, criminal apprehension, and handler protection.
